Amish Paradise

This past week we (finally) celebrated our 4 year wedding anniversary (over a month late... ). Earlier this year we found a great deal (through Livingsocial) at a bed and breakfast (the White Oak Inn) in Amish country that we finally used.

We arrived Wednesday afternoon, went to our tiny room and enjoyed a fruit and cheese platter with sparkling cider while watching Bulletproof Monk (we are true romantics here). We spent the rest of the evening exploring the grounds (and the sheep that completely freaked me out), playing Phase 10 in the common room, and reading a book together.
I'm a shark!

Thursday morning we enjoyed our first breakfast at the inn (which was way better than those "continental" breakfasts a lot of dinky motels serve) with a bunch of older couples. Yeah. We found out that we were the only young couple in sight. Oh well, it was still awesome.

We spent that day exploring Amish country. I found two spots I wanted to visit, so visit we did. Our first stop was a fabric store (surprise?) where we found the most glorious of glorious things: a button bin. It was a-freakin-mazing. $3 for a big scoop of buttons. You better believe we spent at least 20 minutes in front of that bin alone. Brad sure loves me.
So happy! Buttons!

After the buttons we headed to Yoder farms - an old Amish farm that is now open to the public for tours. No one currently lives in the houses but they are still decorated in the Amish style and the kitchen in one of the houses is still used to produce food available to purchase in the gift shop. It was fun to explore more of their culture and find out more about their lifestyle.
I didn't get a picture of the houses - but here are the buggies and a playground.

Oh, I should also mention that for lunch we stopped off at a little bistro where we had the best grilled cheese sandwich of our lives. It was on a cranberry walnut bread, with pepper-jack and provolone cheese, and a cherry butter. Goodness gracious that was quite the sandwich.

Then we headed back to the inn and enjoyed a 4-course meal (again with the old people - who were all getting happily drunk) and then played more Phase 10.

The next morning we enjoyed our last delicious breakfast (nutella-stuffed french toast, anyone?) and then headed home. It was a fun little getaway. We got to spend lots of time together and enjoy all the beautiful changing leaves and the countryside. Happy anniversary to us! :)

Um, that is so fun. And I would've spent waaay more than 20 minutes looking at buttons, most likely. Or I would've just taken multiple, multiple scoopfuls. :)
